Soma Biswas ,Indian athlete

Soma BiswasSoma Biswas was born on 16th May in the year 1978 in Ranaghat, indian state of West Bengal. She is an athlete who lives in Calcutta, India. Soma Biswas is a specialised athlete in the heptathlon. She has participated at the Asian Games held at Busan, South Korea in the year 2002. She won the silver medal at the tournament. Thus the rise of Soma Biswas to the fame greared up after this honor. Another silver medal, came from her participation at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha. However she managed to win the 110m hurdles, the 200m and the 800m during that heptathlon.

Women athletes along with Soma Biswas, Sushmita Singha Roy and Krishna Poonia Soma Biswasglorified India as they won gold, silver and bronze, in the order given, while their male paisanos foundered on the second day of the 16th Asian Athletics Championships. It was at the time of the last part of a highly frustrating day, the trio fined unexpectedly medals to bring some cheer in the Indian camp.

Kolkata-based Soma Biswas winning the heptathlon event with a point tally of 5377 got India their first gold in the championships. In this event her city mate Sushmita collected 5308 points to finish second for silver. By this 27-year-old athlete, the gold medal winning effort was well below her personal best of 6186. Thus it can be said that `Women power came to the fore for India at the Asian Games`. For the year of 2003, she was one of the recipients of the highly prestigious award in sports, the Arjuna Award for Athletics.
