Spondylosis signifies a set of changes in the spine marked by narrowing of the inter-vertebral spaces or formation of a new bone from the adjacent vertebra impinging on the nerve roots. The most common types of spondylosis are cervical spondylosis and lumbar spondylosis in which degenerative changes takes place respectively, in the neck and low-back regions of the spine.
The Cervical Spondylosis is a disorder of cervical vertebrae. It is often the result of degenerative disk disease and it occurs when one vertebra slips slightly forward over another vertebra. The displaced bone may pinch the sciatic nerve where it leaves the spine. This is one of the most common ailments. It is a condition wherein the vertebral column is compressed and the flow of energy gets restricted in the nerves at the cervical (neck) region, which later penetrates in the lower areas of the body causing pain and discomfort.
Symptoms of Cervical Spondylosis:
The associated symptoms of the disease are pain and stiffness in the affected region, with such symptoms in the upper limbs and inability to bend and move properly. There may be a tingling sensation in the arms and fingers in this case. There are also the other symptoms of cervical spondylosis, such as:
Stress over neck, head, shoulders and upper part of the back
Pain and heaviness in the above mentioned organs
Vertigo
Stiffness and pain in moving the neck.
Cause of Cervical Spondylosis:
People`s neck has seven cervical vertebrae, which are arranged one over another, having a particular gap between each of them. In some conditions like ageing, injuries, any disease related to bones and in the condition of wear or growing of bones the distance or gap between these vertebrae becomes abnormal. Consequently the nerves passing, through that region get pressurized, giving rise to the symptoms of this disease. Working continuously in tense atmosphere also produces this condition. This irregularity can be diagnosed as cervical spondylosis, when the symptoms are caused without inflammation.
Some of the factors, which cause these painful conditions, are wrong standing or sitting posture, sudden pulling of a heavy weight (especially after a long period of rest), injury to the spine and cancer.
Treatment of Cervical Spondylosis by Nature Cure:
The routine treatment for spondylosis involves the use of closely fitting neck collars in case of cervical spondylosis. This is usually along with painkillers. The physiotherapy methods are radiant heat, short-wave diathermy, massage, traction and exercise along with the use of a proper mattress and pillow. However, these do not always relieve the painful symptoms and are short-lived measures.
Water Treatments:
In the Nature Cure treatment of Cervical Spondylosis Hot and Cold or Infra Red lamp fomentation in the painful region imparts immediate relief. Neck pack & Mud Pack is an effective measure. Enema should be given if the bowels are not clear. Spinal bath and Immersion bath are its specific treatment.
Diet:
Patients get special benefit if kept on fruit diet for some days. Even after reverting to normal diet, the food should be very light and Satvic.
Treatment of Cervical Spondylosis by Yogic Asanas:
While treating this disease, it should be kept in mind that Asanas or exercises with forward bending should be avoided. Asanas with backward bending like Bhujangasana, Shalabhasana, Dhanurasana, Supta Vajrasana, Gomukhasana, Ardha Matsyendrasana, Ushtrasana, Matsyasana and Chakrasana are helpful in this disease. One should also practise long and deep inhalation and exhalation and when the pain reduces, Surya Namaskara may also be practised. Nadi shodhana and Ujjayi pranayama as well as exercises of back and waist described in Sukshma Vyayama also yield special benefit.
Treatment of Cervical Spondylosis by Magnetic Therapy:
If the disease has not so far progressed as completely to damage the inter-vertebral discs and bones, Magnetic therapy offers one of the most effective cures for spondylosis. The mode of application in the above conditions is as follows:
In case of cervical spondylosis, the magnets should be applied to the neck and to the part to which the pain and tingling may radiate. Accordingly, the North Pole should be placed over the most painful point on the neck and the South Pole on the shoulder, elbow or the palm of the left or right hand. South-pole oil should be applied to the site of pair before applying the magnets.
